Edison was born in Milan, Ohio, on Feb. 11, 1847, and grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the seventh and last child of Samuel Ogden Edison a jack-of-all-trades, and Nancy Matthews Elliott a former teacher.

At an early age, he showed a fascination for mechanical things ,for chemical experiments and, a voracious appetite for knowledge, reading books on a wide range of subjects.

In 1869, at only 22, Edison moved to New York City developing his first invention, an improved stock ticker, the Universal Stock Printer, which synchronized several stock tickers transactions.

For the rights of this invention he received $40.000, money that helped him set up his first small laboratory.

This was the start of his hundreds of patents, most for electrical devices, electric lighting and power.   

His first patent (U.S. Patent 90,646), was granted on June 1, 1869.

And was followed by patents and inventions like telegraph, phonograph, electric light bulb, alkaline storage batteries and kinetograph (a camera for motion pictures), Dynamo-Electric Machine, Edison’s motors and generators and a lot more.

It was Edison's solution to cheap electricity.

From 100 watts input power he generated a staggering 600.
